Since being elected, I’ve been campaigning in Parliament for us to get our fair share of this Labour Government’s record £2.65 billion investment in England’s flood defences, so I’m delighted that Adur will receive £1,470,000 to bolster our resilience against flooding.
The funding will be going towards these schemes:
– Shoreham and Lancing Coastal Defences Beach Management Plan (the big shingle shift from Shoreham to Lancing) – £550,000
– Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme (the walls along the north side of Shoreham Beach and the banks of the Adur south of the A27) – £636,000
– Pad Farm Intertidal Habitat Creation (restoring intertidal habitat at Pad Farm, north of the A27) £84,000
– Shoreham and Lancing Coastal Defences Beach Management Plan 2026/27 – 2030/31 (the big shingle shift from Shoreham to Lancing!) – £200,000
Separately, Adur District Council are currently working hard to come to an agreement with the Sussex Yacht Club to ensure the final part of the flood wall in Shoreham is completed as soon as possible.
The Conservatives left flood defences across the country in the worst condition on record, putting lives and livelihoods across the country at risk.
With the frequency of extreme weather events only continuing to rise, leading to devastating impacts for people, homes and businesses – costing the UK economy billions each year – decisive action to invest in adapting to climate change has never been more important.
In addition to protecting families from the devastation of flooding, this investment will support economic growth by protecting businesses, supporting jobs, and supporting a stable economy in the face of the increasing risk of flooding as a result of climate change.
Floods Minister Emma Hardy said:
“I know from firsthand experience the devastating impacts that flooding can cause.
The role of Government is to protect its citizens. However, we inherited flood defences in their worst condition on record following 14 years of Conservative neglect.
Through our Plan for Change, we are supporting four schemes across East Worthing and Shoreham, ensuring residents have the long-term protection they need, while boosting local growth and creating new jobs.’’
