Launching our bold Road Safety Strategy

It has certainly been a busy start to 2026! Last week, the Labour Government launched its new Road Safety Strategy to save thousands of lives and make our roads safer for everyone in Adur and Worthing.

This is the first strategy in over a decade and outlines bold actions, including cracking down on speeding, mobile phone usage, drink/drug driving, and not using seat belts. The Government is also taking action against illegal ‘ghost plates’ – number plates used by criminals to evade Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras – following a fantastic campaign led by my colleague, Sarah Coombes MP.

In other good news, families across East Worthing and Shoreham are securing cheaper mortgages, as costs have fallen by over £2,400 since Labour took office. This means families taking out new mortgages are saving around £200 each month – putting money back into their pockets.

In the House of Commons, I asked the Home Secretary how this Government plans to establish safe and legal routes for those fleeing danger, while securing our borders from criminal gangs profiting from small boat crossings, and I was pleased to hear of our plans for new capped routes.

I was also glad to highlight the BBC’s vital role in supporting our economy and democracy in a Westminster Hall debate, advocating for its preservation for generations to come.

In the constituency, it was great to meet with Lancing FC to discuss how we might improve local facilities. Over the weekend, I dropped leaflets through doors in Lancing alongside our dedicated Adur Labour councillors to update residents on our work for the community.

I hope everyone is having a great start to the year!
