Giving young people the right to vote
Engaging young people in our democracy is crucial, so I’m thrilled that the Government has announced that – as promised in our manifesto – 16 and 17-year-olds will have the right to vote at the next general election. This is welcome news as young people will now get a say in their future and how our country is run.
The Government additionally announced it has signed a first-of-its-kind agreement with Germany to crack down on criminal smuggling gangs, ensuring security, growth, and jobs for working people.
Locally, I had a brilliant time visiting the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, where it was great to see this fantastic clean power project up close. I’m delighted that the Government has now granted development consent for Rampion 2, which once completed, will create enough energy to power all households in Sussex.
I also joined members of the World of Widewater Committee to see the progress at the Lagoon. In recent days, the water has started to flow through the mitigation pipe, and we have thankfully started to see wildlife return. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in saving this precious nature reserve!
In Worthing, I met with local businesses to discuss issues relating to the works in the town centre. I also had the pleasure of sampling some delicious cake at St Nicolas Church’s regular coffee morning in Shoreham!
Last week I was also thrilled to see the Lionesses win their match with Sweden – wishing them luck in the Euro 2025 semi-finals!
