The economy, energy and election laws

Last week, the Chancellor delivered her Spring Forecast, highlighting how this Labour Government is changing Britain for the better.

Thanks to our economic plan, borrowing is at its lowest level in six years, and working people are set to be over £1,000 a year better off in real terms by the next election.

That said, global energy markets are currently very volatile due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, so I took the opportunity last week to ask the Minister for European Union Relations about how the Government plans to deepen co-operation and trade with the EU and other allies in the face of global turbulence.

In the House of Commons chamber, I also raised constituents’ concerns about the influence foreign money has on our elections, welcoming our Representation of the People Bill that will strengthen the rules on political donations.

On Friday, I visited Hobgoblin Music’s warehouse in East Worthing and then visited Broadwater C of E Primary for a tour and to learn about their road safety concerns at the school’s crossing.

Over the weekend, it was lovely to attend St Michael and All Angels Church’s coffee morning in Southwick, before heading to Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association’s AGM.

Alongside some of our brilliant local councillors, it was great to speak with residents in Shoreham, Lancing, Broadwater and East Worthing about our work in the community and pick up casework. There were numerous reports of bad potholes, despite the Government giving West Sussex County Council £27 million to fill them. One of our councillors has arranged for WSCC’s highways team to visit roads in East Worthing in the weeks ahead to push for proper resurfacing there.
