Our new Prime Minister
This week, the new Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham, entered 10 Downing Street.
In his first speech as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham set out his vision for the country, including helping with the cost of living, ending rough sleeping, and taking power from Westminster and Whitehall, and putting it back into our communities.
I nominated Andy after hearing how he hopes to deliver good growth and rising standards in every postcode, specifically in coastal communities like ours. I am looking forward to seeing Andy get to work.
I am grateful to Sir Keir Starmer for all the work he did leading Labour to a historic victory, delivering new rights for workers and renters, recovering our NHS, and rebuilding our reputation on the world stage.
Last week, I was glad to see the Maritime Minister announce that the decision to remove compensation payments from Coastguard Rescue Officers in September will no longer go ahead.
I previously wrote to Virginia McVea, the Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), with my concerns, so I am pleased these payments will remain in recognition of local volunteers’ invaluable work.
