Construction works at Widewater Lagoon in Lancing.

Work begins on Widewater Lagoon

Work has officially begun on the Widewater Lagoon nature reserve, helping secure the lagoon’s future for generations to come.

After a dry summer last year, the mitigation pipe which feeds the lagoon became blocked, causing the lagoon to dry out and wildlife to suffer.

Through working with the Environment Agency, we were able to arrange an urgent temporary fix. I am delighted that we secured funding to fully replace the damaged sections of the mitigation pipe and that this essential work to replace the pipe is now underway and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

I am incredibly grateful to residents, the World of Widewater Committee, West Sussex County Council, and Lancing Parish Council for working with me to save the lagoon and our local wildlife.

In Westminster, Labour MPs voted to scrap the two-child limit, which puts our country on track for the biggest reduction in child poverty in a single Parliament.

The Health Secretary also announced £10million to fund travel costs for families whose child has cancer, so no one misses out on care because of income or postcode.

Finally, we announced the expansion of our Best Start free breakfast clubs to 500 more schools across the country from April, targeting support for 300,000 children who need it most.

After seeing the huge success of Holmbush Primary Academy’s free breakfast club, I am delighted that these clubs are being rolled out further – with more children able to benefit from a free breakfast, and parents getting additional free childcare so they can get to work.
