Renters’ rights come into force in Adur and Worthing
Last week, Labour’s historic Renters’ Rights Act came into force, banning no-fault evictions and ending bidding wars for everyone in Adur and Worthing.
I am also pleased that Adur and Worthing Councils are joining the Connect to Work programme, supporting economically inactive and long-term unemployed residents – particularly those with health conditions or disabilities – to get into work and stay in work through tailored support. I highlighted this in the House of Commons, as well as raising the issue of young people not in employment, education or training.
Also in the House, I highlighted the value of having a windfall tax due to the conflict in the Middle East seeing BP’s profits more than double. The Chancellor responded by setting out how the Government is delinking gas and electricity prices by increasing the electricity generator levy, so that no energy company can make excess profits because of the conflict.
In the constituency, I met with carers at an inpatient recovery unit and community hub for people experiencing psychosis in Worthing, discussed road safety concerns with parents and the Headteacher of Buckingham Park Primary School in Shoreham, and attended the opening of the newly refurbished Chippingdale Cricket Club pavilion dedicated to Paul Baker.
It was brilliant to see Lancing’s Flare Audio receive the King’s Award for Enterprise (Innovation) for its unique breakthrough product Calmer, an in-ear device that reduces stress from annoying and uncomfortable noises without blocking sound – avoiding the isolation caused by earplugs. I also enjoyed the 7am performance by Sompting Village Morris on May Day morning on Coronation Green in Shoreham!
Over the weekend, I enjoyed speaking with residents at their doors in Broadwater, East Worthing, Southwick and Shoreham – picking up casework and checking if there was anything they needed help with.
Local elections take place this Thursday 7 May, so do make sure to check where your polling station is and get out to vote.
