Boost for workers’ rights and wages for people in Adur and Worthing
After advocating for stronger protections for workers in our area, I am pleased that this Labour Government is delivering new measures to enhance workers’ rights and increase pay for local people.
From the 1st of April, our significant pay increases mean that the lowest-paid workers will take home hundreds more pounds each year, with increases of £900 for full-time workers on the National Living Wage and £1,500 for those on the National Minimum Wage (18-20 year olds).
Measures in our Employment Rights Act also came into force last week, such as strengthened Statutory Sick Pay, which will provide stronger protection for people in insecure work.
The Prime Minister also outlined the measures we are taking to ease the cost of living, including taking £117 off the average energy bill, which is welcome given current global uncertainties.
As Parliament is now in recess, I have enjoyed spending all my time in the constituency, planting trees at Apron Community Farm and visiting Southwick Community Centre to discuss their recent funding grant.
It was also fantastic to launch our local election campaign in Worthing alongside our brilliant neighbours, Peter Kyle MP and Dr Beccy Cooper MP, and Worthing’s Council Leader, Cllr Sophie Cox.
As always, it has been great to speak to hundreds of residents by door-knocking in Southwick, Lancing, Broadwater, East Worthing and Shoreham. I am always grateful to residents who take the time to share their views with me and as ever, I picked up casework to help with.
I also got the chance to enjoy a beautiful Easter Sunday walk from Shoreham to Bramber Castle – I hope everyone managed to get out in the sunshine over the long weekend!
